What is Holistic/Swedish Massage?

Massage is an ancient healing art which has developed over thousands of years.  Modern massage is based on techniques developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by Swedish physiologist and fencing master, Per Henrik Ling, and is still referred to as Swedish massage, because of his influence.

Swedish massage uses a combination of movements to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, particularly muscles.  It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole body or part of it.  It promotes suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress and is a natural and effective way to treat physical and psychological conditions.

Physiological benefits:

  •  Improves skin tone and color
  •  Stimulates and improves circulation
  •  Improves lymphatic drainage and helps to reduce swelling
  •  Relieves muscle fatigue and stiffness
  •  Relieves tired, stiff joints
  •  Speeds up digestion and waste removal
  •  Promotes relaxation

Psychological benefits:

  •  Relaxes the mind and body, reducing stress and tension
  •  Lifts the emotions and promotes positive feelings
  •  Increases energy levels by invigorating the systems of the body

What's involve?

Your first appointment will begin with a consultation during which I will ask you about your current health, medical history and emotional well-being.  All details are held in the strictest of confidence.  The massage will then be tailored to suit your specific needs and can be soothing and relaxing or stimulating and invigorating. Career oil will be used.

The treatment is carried out whilst you are lying on a massage couch.  Throughout your treatment, you will be covered with warm, soft towels, exposing only the area of the body being massaged, to ensure you feel comfortable at all times in a secure environment.  The massage will start with light strokes and gentle pressure and build up to deeper strokes and firmer pressure, whilst maintaining a slow rhythm throughout.  Soothing background music is played to help you feel relaxed and at ease.

Most people experience a sense of well-being, calmness and relaxation, others find it uplifting and revitalizing.
